Basis

Basis for energy retailers

A new kind of MEP. And a new platform to build retail on.

Basis is a certified Metering Equipment Provider in New Zealand, but the meter is only the first layer. On top of it sits circuit-level data, dispatchable control, and a fleet API. A stack no other MEP in the country can offer.

Two ways retailers can use it: from the meter in each home, and from the API across the whole fleet.

From the meter

Four layers of metering data legacy MEPs can't deliver.

Every Basis Board contains an integrated smart meter: cellular-connected, independent of home WiFi, streaming data continuously. Four things that matters for your retail product.

Instantaneous data

Stop waiting 24–48 hours.

Traditional MEPs deliver half-hourly consumption data on a next-day or two-day cycle. Basis delivers real-time data from the meter as it happens. Your customers see their consumption as it occurs. Your billing systems do too.

Circuit-level visibility

Not just the whole-home total.

Every Basis-equipped home streams circuit-level consumption alongside the meter feed. Your retail product team can price and recommend against specific load categories (hot water, EV, heat pump) instead of aggregate kWh.

Load shaping via control

Shift loads to follow your tariffs.

The Basis Board can dispatch circuit-level control on behalf of the retailer: hot water off-peak, EV charging into solar windows, load shedding during system peaks. Measured outcomes, audit-grade telemetry.

DER tariff access

Unlock network-side incentives.

Basis-equipped customers on the Vector network already qualify for the DER tariff, around $110/year per home. More networks coming. Your retail product is the distribution channel for those savings.

One panel, one meter, one data feed.

The Basis meter is integrated inside the Basis Board, not a separate device. Installs in under a minute. Your customer gets a cleaner wall. Your ops team gets one fewer integration.

From the API

The only dataset of its kind in New Zealand.

The Basis API exposes aggregate, anonymised, real-time data across every panel in the fleet. For retailers, that's two things your trading and product teams can do that they couldn't before.

Real-time energy flows

Aggregate, anonymised, live.

The Basis API exposes real-time flow data across the entire fleet: where generation is happening, where demand is spiking, where flexibility is available. A view no retailer has had before.

Consumption modelling

Build trading models on real data.

Pull typical load profiles by region, tariff type, demographic, or customer segment. Model real-time vs controllable demand. Shape hedging strategy around observed, not assumed, behaviour.

Partnership model

Three ways to start. Most partners do all three.

MEP appointment

Appoint Basis as your MEP and unlock real-time meter data across your Basis-equipped customer base. Standard NZ metering contract structure.

API access

Production-grade REST + webhooks. Scoped by customer consent. SDKs in TS, Python, and curl.

Co-designed tariffs

Work with our team to design Smart Plan products that only make sense on Basis-equipped homes. We help position and measure them.
