“Basis is part of how we earned our Qualmark Gold rating. As a GM, finally seeing exactly what a room uses, and being able to show it, has been a real step towards running a more sustainable hotel.”
A hotel with a higher bar
Sunrise Garden Serviced Apartments sits on the edge of Gills Reserve, a protected ecological asset that is home to native flora and birdlife. That setting raises the bar. Gary, the hotel’s general manager, wanted sustainability built into how the place runs, not bolted on as a label. So he set out to see what was on the market and find a way to genuinely measure and reduce the hotel’s energy use. Gary runs the hotel by the numbers. For years that meant revenue: the income from each room sold, the value of rooms left empty, the metrics every hotelier watches. He came to see energy as the next number to manage with that same rigour, because electricity is one of a hotel’s largest costs and, until now, one of its least visible.
From guesswork to clarity
Hotel power consumption is different from a home. Guests check out and leave the lights, heating and TV running. Gary wanted to see it, not guess at it. “Basis gives me room-by-room clarity tied to daily occupancy. I can see exactly what a room draws, and when. The pattern was obvious: energy left running in empty rooms that housekeeping could simply switch off.” Gary S, General Manager, from Sunrise Garden’s
What Qualmark Gold means
Qualmark is New Zealand Tourism’s official quality and sustainability accreditation. Businesses are independently assessed against the Sustainable Tourism Business standards, then rated Bronze, Silver or Gold. Gold is the top tier, reserved for operators leading the way in making New Zealand a world-class sustainable destination. To reach Gold, an inspector looks for a business that is actively measuring its impact and finding real ways to reduce it. That is exactly why Gary brought Basis in “We didn’t just want to talk about sustainability. We got Basis because we wanted to actually measure our consumption and bring it down.” Gary S, General Manager, from Sunrise Garden’s
The result
Sunrise Garden earned its Qualmark Gold rating, and Gary names Basis as one of the pieces that helped get there. Waste that was once invisible is now something his team can see and act on, turning sustainability from an intention into a daily habit.
Basis helped this hotel earn a Qualmark Gold rating. “Sustainability here is not a branding exercise. It is built into our operations, monitored through data, and strengthened by external partnerships such as Basis” Gary S, General Manager, from Sunrise Garden’s
